June 9 - June 15, 2013

Yikers!  Used wrong date on last posting - it was a loooooong work week, felt like 2 weeks, but the week date should have ended on June 8th. I don't think any of you noticed anyway.
  Here's the next seven.

I think I went through a leather brooch faze years ago. Here's the last of them. I don't have a lepidopteran field guide so I don't know if you can find one of these flitting around your garden but I like it all the same.

When first I was offered this brooch, I wasn't so sure about it, but it has grown on me. Couldn't think what it reminded me of - first I thought a spider with multi legs, then a starburst in the heavens, finally, it dawned on me. It reminds me of those wall clocks in the fifties - the dial face replaces the lovely blue stone in the centre. I love those clocks........and this brooch.

Our cat Violet is a large fuzz ball. She has layers and layers of fur with a lovely neck ruff somewhat like this brooch although her legs are furry to her toes.

A friend's sister gave me this brooch. It'a a little bit spooky but don't we all need an angel or two looking out for our kitties.

Another Russian pin. Have nooooo idea what it's celebrating or not celebrating but I muchly like the design and colour of it.

I like this strange and smiling fish. This one comes from up around Killaloe, Ontario way, an area brimming with artists (and lovely woods and lakes).

I got this from the Maritime Museum in Lunenburg Nova Scotia. It's the famous Bluenose schooner. If ever you are out in The Maritimes, go to Lunenburg - beautiful town, great museum.

June 2 - June 15, 2013

I've been asked a number of times if I have enough brooches to blog for a year. A while ago I counted them up, so now I know approximately how many brooches I have - approximately, since I kept losing count. Alas, the number wasn't a year's worth. I have lots left, will blog til I run out, then come back for the Christmas array. And then, when I get a week's worth of new ones I will blog them.
Here's the next 7.

I've had this feathery bird for a long time. I like how the bird is plowing through the air. Even though it doesn't look like a merganiser, to me I think of it as one of those. (Methinks though that a kitty has gummed it a bit).

I like Haida design so was pleased as punch when a friend brought this back from a toot out West.

Today is Queen Elizabeth's 60th Anniversary of her coronation. This is worn for her as no doubt when she's not arrayed in gown and crown, she lets her hair down and dances the bug-a-boo.

Another Brit bus that I bought in the London Underground. We rode one of these coming back from the theatre one night - a double decker bus for sure, but the front end of this bus brooch looks a bit screwpy.

This penguin always needs a bath before I wear him - he collects dust (like the rest of my house). He wouldn't have that problem if he lived in the Antarctic.

Another travel pin. This is a view looking up one of the allees (sorry, no can do make an accent) of the Tuileries to the Louvre. Lots of poodle and tiny dog sightings.

It's an armadillo, and I guess the Texas flag courtesy of a travelling kin.

May 26 - June 1, 2013

As a Canadian, the weather has always been a top discussion topic. On CBC radio, they announce the weather occurring in different parts of Ontario, sometimes the only variance being 1 degree Celsius. I know the temp and if there's sun/rain/snow in Thunder Bay, Toronto, Renfrew County, and on and on, (sadly, they no longer include Pickle Lake)....... each day. I love the CBC for many reasons, but that's one of them - it's quirky! Here, in my town it was H.....O....T!
And that's all I gotta say.
Here's another 7.

Lizards and their kin are another favourite creature. My brother had a salamander named Henry when we were kids. We would put him in our shirts and he would run around and poke his head out of our sleeves. He was wonderful. The Iguana on the other hand was not so friendly. This coppery guy is pretty snazzy - I like the rough simpleness of it.

Yes, beware of red-headed girls. If she had a speech bubble I think it would be "Well I Oughta......." said in a threatening voice (I like her little fist). Did Jackie Gleason use to say that? - my mind's a fog.

I love this beautiful delicate brooch - the shoes are perfect miniatures. Wish they came in size 8 1/2. Another kid remembrance -  the Toronto CNE. Every year we'd pay our money and go into the tent and see the Tattooed Man and other intriguing individuals. My favourite was "The Fat Lady". Her name was Dainty Dora. She was always dressed well and I was impressed with how teeny her feet looked. I now call feet Dainty Doras.

I've always liked mosaics and although this brooch is a bit on the rough side, it's pretty. In a Bill Bryson book he mentions stumbling across a Roman mosaic
floor while he was on a trek through the British countryside. Fortunate man.

This is the easiest brooch to put on. I like the dangley beads and you can spin them (good play value). And it's the brooch equivalent of worry beads. I've always wondered how the beads were put on the pin.

Now this is one happy moon. Look at that grin. I think he's ready to burst out in song ......Oh would you like to swing on a star, carry moon beams home in a jar.................................

Delicate china pansies. Usually these brooches take a bit of manoeuvring to get  them to sit right on your clothing, but this one has perfect balance. And lovely  soft colours.

May 19 - May 25, 2013

I was off on a toot to the Ontario Hooking  Craft Guild Convention in Kingston for a few days with some friends. Good times! So now I'm playing catch-up blog time again.
Viola, here's 7 more.

It was the Victoria long weekend and I got down and dirty with the garden. Had to wear something appropriate with my gardening outfit of old tee shirt and rolled up jeans. Gee, what would Martha have worn?

Yikers, I lost another brooch, but this time in my front garden I think amongst the lavender, or the lilies, or the grass, (which needs cutting) or......Strange thing is, I lost a pair of yellow pliers in the front garden last year, and now my pretty yellow bird brooch. My neighbour and I think it's a Bermuda Triangle for yellow things. If you live in town, please take a boo at the garden as you meander by, you might catch sight of it. Note: I was going to wear my Queen brooch today, it being Q V B-Day but thought I'd get it dirty so I was going to wear bird while gardening, Queen while relaxing with wine on porch later in the day, then split the time the next day. Sigh!

Yesterday was Queen Victoria's birthday so I wear this Queen Liz brooch as a nod to that British monarch (see bird brooch blather above). Got this at a friend's yard sale; she had set it aside for me. She bought it in Tucson Arizona a long time ago. I love it. Love the twinklies, and wasn't she a beautiful young woman. As an aside; this holiday was also called Fire Cracker day when I was a kid.

Throwing my mind back some decades, I think a sister (the 4 year older one - you know who you are) made this brooch. At the church there was a once-a-week summer craft program. I remember sunlight streaming through the church windows, and for a break, a Dixie cup with orange Freshie, and those nummy British biscuits (butter cookies that had patterns on them). This brooch has lost a few tail feathers and wing bits but I treasure it as I do those memories. Please note: it should be interesting what the difference in remembrance between my sister and me. Maybe my other siblings will join in.

I had chosen to wear another brooch today (actually a second CGIT pin since I was heading off to a cottage with friends) but while checking morning email, Goggle had a Mountie in celebration of their 140th Anniversary. This isn't an old pin - did I get it when I finally saw The Musical Ride? Je ne sais pas.

This button pin makes me laugh. I wore it at the OHCG Convention (see blather  at top). It can be read HOOK, or HO OK. For all the jokes about "hookers" when you are a rug hooker, it is a perfect pin. Thanks dear friend.

I saw my first dragonfly of the season this week. I like that small iridescent green glass for the body and the happy curve of its "tail". OK, it can't be called tail - what is that called?
